Our Shire comprises some 3,400 square kilometres of cattle grazing, rich green river flats, wine growing areas, thoroughbred horse studs, coal mines and the vibrant communities of Muswellbrook, Denman and Sandy Hollow.

Two Power Stations (Liddell and Bayswater) approximately 18 kilometres south of Muswellbrook generate almost 40% of NSW electricity. Coal mining plays a major part in the local economy with coal being used both locally for power generation and for export.

Three of Australia’s biggest thoroughbred studs – Darley Denman (formerly Woodlands Stud) and
Coolmore Stud and the historic Widden Stud – are located within our Shire as well as a number of other internationally renowned studs which continue to produce the finest and fastest horses performing on race tracks all around the world.

The Upper Hunter Wine Trail includes wineries located within Muswellbrook Shire – Cruickshank
Callatoota Estate, James Estate, Two Rivers Wines – our fine red and white wines are enjoyed in
homes and fine restaurants in the Hunter Region, across Australia and throughout the world.

Denman – our winemakers welcome you to their tasting rooms and invite you to take home a supply of their unique product to enjoy at your leisure.

Both Muswellbrook and Denman have excellent Golf Courses and visitors are always welcome.
The par 72 championship Muswellbrook Golf Course is rated as one of the best in country New South Wales.

Muswellbrook with a population of just under 12,700, is the major town in the Shire and is approximately
260 kms north west of Sydney on the New England Highway (
Denman (2000 population) and Sandy Hollow (300 population) are located to the west of Muswellbrook on the Golden Highway ( We have a number of Clubs including Muswellbrook RSL Club, Muswellbrook Workers Club, Denman RSL Club and Denman Bowling Club.

Our Shire boasts a wide range of quality services including major retail shopping centres, industrial estates, quality professional services, hospitals and medical centres, schools and TAFE facilities, an outstanding Regional Art Centre, Olympic-size swimming pools at both Denman and Muswellbrook (including a heated indoor pool at Muswellbrook - open all year), a host of cultural and sporting activities and facilities.

Lake Glenbawn is just a short drive away - a perfect year-round water playground with lots of space for camping and caravanning and huge fish just ready to be caught. Crystal clear water tumbles straight down from the mile high Barrington Tops provide ideal conditions for sailing and water skiing or just mucking around in boats. Lake Liddell Recreation Area is approximately 11 kms south of Muswellbrook off the New England Highway and provides for excellent camping and water sport.
